AlTiC introduction

Comparing with Al-Ti-B Master alloy, Al-Ti-C master alloy owns some specific advantages as below:

1. Al-Ti-C master alloy is much purer than Al-Ti-B master alloy, because there is no potassium fluoborate in raw materials, and Al-Ti-C master alloy is less likely to produce salt inclusions; it obviously reduces the aluminum crack defects, and improve the aluminum property greatly;

2. The TiC particle heterogeneous nuclei of Al-Ti-C master alloy is made up of two atoms and molecules. It is smaller size as 0.5~1.5μm distributed and dispersed evenly. It is not easy to congregate, and it is easy to decompose over time. The size of TiB2 is bigger (0.5~3μm) in Al-Ti-B master alloy. It is very easy to congregate into cluster,and gather tendency is even worse over time, which not only clogs the filter and reduces the service life of the rolls, but also directly causes the perforation of the aluminum products, especially the foil, and increases the defective rate;

3. There is approximately 1/500 TiB2 making α- Al nucleate, while the nucleation rate in Al-Ti-C master alloy is as 10 times, even 100 times, as the nucleation rate in Al-Ti-B master alloy,therefore, the refining effect and speed of Al-Ti-C master alloy is outstanding. It attains ideal grain refinement effect in only 3 minutes after feeding, and the grain refining effect can last over 30 minutes;

4. When in pursuit of the same refinement effect, Al-Ti-C master alloy adding quantity is less than Al-Ti-B master alloy. The number of TiC particles adding quantity is 50% less than TiB2 particles. It can gain less than 200μm isometric crystal with only 1‰ adding quantity in pure aluminum. It effectively reduce pinhole or pin-porosity with less hard spots added in molten aluminum. Meanwhile, the nucleation chance for each particle is higher when the total number of particles is reduced, so it prevents the particles from gather and sediment effectively,thus obtains the perfect refining effect.

5. It often contains Zr, Cr. elements in high strength aluminum alloys, which elements all can have interfacial reaction with TiB2. That will lead to TiB2 losing its nucleation function. This phenomenon is called "poisoned". But it is rarely happened to Al-Ti-C master alloy, thus it's better refining effect.

6.In the wrought and foundry production of boron-free nuclear industrial aluminum, The performance of Al-Ti-C grain refiner is much better.
